The care and maintenance of public records pertaining to land titles and access to them.  Birth, death and marriage records for the County are also kept in the Register of Deeds office as well as many other records.

The Register of Deeds serves as a custodian and manager of large numbers of public records.  Records pertaining to real estate and marriage records date back to the formation of the County in 1881.  North Carolina began keeping records of births and deaths in 1913.  Many born prior to that date have established delayed birth certificates.

Land records transactions including Deeds, Deeds of Trusts, Partnerships, Assumed Names, Plats and numerous other filings are recorded and returned to the presenting parties presenting them for registration.  Uniform Commercial Code records are also recorded in the Register of Deeds office.

All Vance County Notaries Public must appear before the Register of Deeds who administers the oath of office to them and maintains records of dates they are commissioned and the dates the commissions expire.

Records of Discharges from the various branches of the Military are maintained and certified copies issued.
