SURPLUS PROPERTIES – LAND
On behalf of Vance 4- H, E. M. Rollins Elementary School and NC A&T SU Cooperative Extension program, we would like to invite you to come see our students participating in a program that puts kids on a fast track to healthy habits.
What: Speedway to Healthy is a 1,200- square- foot, walk- through exhibit representing the human body. This creative educational exhibit teaches children in kindergarten through fifth (K- 5) grades how the foods they eat affect their bodies and their health.
When: Tuesday, November 28th – Thursday November 30th from 9:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m.
Where: The exhibit is located inside the Gymnasium at E. M. Rollins Elementary School located at 1600 S. Garnett Saint Ext., Henderson, NC 27537.
Significance: Participants will have an opportunity to experience this unique traveling exhibit focusing on the human body . Childhood obesity is a widespread issue in the state and the nation, with North Carolina having the 23rd highest rate of childhood obesity. The Speedway to Healthy project was created as a resource to fight childhood obesity and poor health among children in North Carolina.

The Kerr-Tar Council of Governments has released an RFP for professional services of a qualified consultant to conduct a community broadband assessment and develop a broadband infrastructure strategy for four counties in the Kerr-Tar region of North Carolina. Vance County Water District water customers may have received a letter recently requesting that residents allow DVR labs, also known as Carolina Fresh Water located in Greensboro, N.C., to complete a free water test. According to the company’s website, the water test will ensure that homeowners have clean, safe drinking water.
Residents should be aware that the company has no affiliation with Vance County. The testing is also NOT the result of any issue with Vance County Water District drinking water, and such testing was not requested by the county.
The Vance County Board of Commissioners recognized the ABC board for displaying sound financial principles and management during their July 6th meeting. The ABC board retired their debt for the Vance County ABC Store 7 years early and saved $175,000 in interest costs. Vance County has partnered with its surrounding counties and has participated in the development of a regional Hazard Mitigation Plan. This plan is intended to identify know areas within our jurisdictions that are susceptible to natural and manmade incidents and to address methods and practices that are intended to lessen or eliminate any impact from such occurrences. A public hearing will take place at the February Board of Commissioners Meeting and we are actively seeking input from the public as a part of this process.

Vance County introduces online permitting capability. By clicking Permits – Online permitting from the county’s main webpage, citizens, contractors and interested individuals are now able to estimate permitting fees, search for contractors, download permit applications, check on the status of permits, and print out monthly permitting activity reports. All of this is available through the Permits and Inspections section of the online permitting.
By using the Code Enforcement area, citizens are now able to make a request or complaint and check on the status of active code enforcement cases. In the near future contractors will have the ability to create a log-in which will allow online submittal of permit applications as well as online requests for inspections.
